CE
presumes that the people doing the job know the job the best, even if they are
not getting the results they want. They are the experts on the Problem, and
ultimately will be the experts on the Solution that is implemented. Client and
Consultant work together to understand how an operation or specific activity
is currently operating, what an ideal model of this function is, and what
changes to current situations could be made to get as close to that ideal
as possible/reasonable.
It doesn't matter what your project is; making a new website, standardizing the way your employees report their time, or getting your car fixed.... The problem can be broken down into simple steps that have been used by businesses for years to successfully manage projects. A general outline of this process is briefly described as:
Relationship Definition
A working relationship is established to agree on goals and expectations, scope and duration, degree of oversight or autonomy desired, and how to get started. Becoming partners who understand their role is key to successfully solving problems.
Discovery & Dialogue
A communications and process audit is undertaken to determine what is working and what is not, and to identify opportunities for new tools, standards, documents or other innovations that will make a company more efficient. This may involve interviews with employees, affected clients, suppliers, or other stakeholders as appropriate.
Feedback & Decision to Act
Issues and insights learned in Discovery & Dialogue are presented for review and discussion. Potential ways to proceed are proposed and discussed, and the team agrees on specific goals and a plan of action.
Project Definition & Execution
Specific changes and project plans are defined to accomplish the goals arrived at by the team. Once the team agrees this Communication Improvement Project Plan will effectively achieve these goals, it is carried out.
Post-Project Review
After completing the Communication Improvement Project, the team evaluates what went on and the new status of company communications. Successes, failures, and new insights uncovered during and post Project are discussed. At this point, the team makes a decision whether to expand or refine the project, and how much opportunity or benefit there would be to repeating the CE process.
