This project was done as a labor of love for a great cause–The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, one of San Francisco's most effective (and not to mention, coolest) non-profit organizations. Working with no budget, no time, and a lot of dedication, this poster and post card campaign helped to make the event a huge success. Original bike illustration and theme by Kelli Bratvold.
Film is one of Brian J. Sherman's greatest interests, and for over 20 years FAF has been at the center of independent film making in San Francisco. He brought a bold new look to their Course Catalogue and Bay Guardian ads to re-energize the organization's image in the age of independent digital film. I personally felt it an honor to receive a glowing response from the FAF community, an aesthetically savvy and well-informed crowd.
This poster is an attempt to capture my feeling of my daily commute from my apartment in the Lower Haight to the BART station at 16th Street. Day after day, a meditation of sorts that was always a unique experience, though on some level always the same. I restricted myself to only black and white, and only one typeface, to focus on composition and use of the word and letter forms to convey the experience. The tensions, sights, and sounds of the city created a snapshot of my life during a particularly vibrant time in San Francisco.
A personal film of the author's attempt to play golf for the first time at age 28. In doing so, he must confront his own fears of becoming older, and tries to understand his relationship to land, money, and his country--a tall order for an 8-minute film following Septeber 11. Shot and completed October-December, 2001, on mini-DV tape and edited in Final Cut Pro and Adobe AfterEffects. Running time: 8.5 min. (Quicktime required)
Though not a wedding photographer by trade, my personal pursuit of photography enhances my relationship to professional photographers, assists on photo shoots, and is sometimes central to powerful client work. My eye for composition, darkroom skills, and knowledge of photographic history and photographic criticism inform all of the work that I do.
